After great stays at the Four Points by Sheraton Bogota and Fairfield by Marriott Embajada (where I stayed in a suite!), it was time to make my way to El Dorado airport to leave Colombia once again. Today I was flying Avianca to Mexico City onboard their A320neo in business class.

Decent business class offering, but admittedly not worth the value.

Preflight Experience at Bogota El Dorado

With an 8:15AM departure, I made sure to be at the airport with time to visit the Avianca Sala VIP Diamond lounge. This lounge is only accessible to Avianca’s Diamond status holders, and passengers flying on Avianca in their regional Business Class or INSIGNIA international business class.

The lounge shares the location with the Avianca Sala VIP Gold, and I’ve got to say that the food offering is vastly better. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to enjoy any of the offerings since I was recovering from a wicked stomach bug. The lounge has since undergone an update, which I hope to review soon!

Seat & Cabin Comfort on the A320neo

Avianca’s aircraft feature Recaro slimline seats in Economy and Business Class. Formerly, Avianca called this cabin Premium when it aimed for a low-cost carrier model, which served as the airline’s almost-business-class product on international flights (similar to SAS). They’ve since abandoned that plan (along with SAS) and now offer a more traditional business class product.

My original seat was 2D, but I ended up switching with the passenger in 1D; she was traveling with her husband in 2K, and I was more than happy to have even closer access to the restroom (just in case, did not need it).

The legroom was barely enough when I was in 2D, feeling a little tight for a business class product (in the Americas, hold the comments on “European Business Class”). The seats offer approximately 33 inches of seat pitch with 21 to 22 inches of width.

Once I moved to seat 1D, the legroom was further reduced by the bulkhead. Again, I didn’t mind on this occasion because I just wasn’t feeling well and felt like being closer to the restroom was a good move, but being 6’1, this hurt a little toward the end.

Waiting at my seat was a bedding kit, which included a pillow and blanket.

The pillow was nicer than I was expecting.

The blanket was branded with Avianca’s logo and was good enough for this regional hop.

Each seat had a carved-out section where you could place some items out of the way. There was also a plug that featured a USB-A port, in case you didn’t have a brick/adapter.

Amenities

Prior to departure, the crew came by with a business class amenity kit, which I thought was very nice for what is essentially a regional flight.

I really liked the bag itself, which is colorful and well-designed. Avianca partnered with Loto del Sur and Mola Sasa to provide quality items to their business class passengers, and I have to say I was impressed.

The kit included tissues, a dental kit (with toothpaste), an eye mask, socks, earplugs, Loto del Sur lotion, and lip balm.

Additionally, we were provided a bottle of water.

Dining & Beverages

Since this was a business class flight, a complimentary meal is included. Service started with a towlette.

The flight attendant came by with a cart offering breakfast options, which included a sweet option or a cheese omelette. I opted for the omelette.

The omelette was accompanied by an arepa, a croissant, butter, jam, and fresh fruit. Truthfully, this was one of the worst things I’ve eaten on an airplane, and I frequently get questionable hot food items when flying United in economy.

In-Flight Entertainment & Connectivity

Avianca has complimentary entertainment that you can watch on your phone or tablet via their Avianca on Air platform. They unfortunately do not have functional wifi on their aircraft, but you can use the connection to view information on your flight and the flight map. Final Verdict: Is Avianca Business Class Worth It?

Avianca took a turn toward being a low-cost carrier (LCC), and now they’re in a weird in-between space where they’re stuck with LCC products and service while trying to compete with premium airlines. Their business class product was best on the ground with the lounge in Bogota, but once in the air, it was really falling short of what anyone should consider to be a “premium” cabin. I paid a hefty price with MileagePlus miles, and while I was ok with eating that cost for the experience (and review), I’d never recommend anyone outright pay for this. The food was terrible, the seat is premium-adjacent, but the crew was great!
