For the first time in over four years, I once again flew United’s Polaris Business Class cabin from Zurich to Washington Dulles airport. After an awesome trip through Europe, I snagged a MileagePlus upgrade on my flight back to the States.

Preflight
Check-in for the flight at Zurich airport went without a hitch, however navigating the airport is anything but seamless from what I remember. We had to go through passport control and then take a train to the E gates, and all that took much longer than it should have.
Thanks to my Star Alliance Gold status through my United Premier 1K status, I had access to the Swiss Senator Lounge at the E gates in Zurich. The Senator Lounge is of higher quality and usually has more refreshments on offer. If you are flying Polaris without Star Alliance Gold status, you would only be given access to the Swiss Business Lounge, which is a step below the Senator lounge.

The boarding process was straightforward, with Premier 1Ks preboarding.
United Polaris Business Class Seat & Cabin

The Polaris cabin on the Boeing 767-400 is in a 1-1-1 configuration, given the fact that the B767 fuselage is narrower than the B787 and B777 aircraft. There are 34 lie-flat seats in the single Polaris cabin, and each seat features a small storage cubby, which can fit the amenity kit and your United-branded headphones.
The seats offers varying levels of privacy, depending on the seat placement. For example, my seat was facing out toward the aisle, making it less private than the seats in front and behind me.

The cabin itself feels worn and tired, and is in need of a refresh. While the seats are relatively new, the cabin paneling and lighting feel out of date compared to the B777-300ER cabins.
United Polaris Business Class Amenities & Comfort
Waiting at each seat were two pillows, a duvet, a throw blanket, slippers, and a Therabody amenity kit. The kit, which doubled as a crossbody bag, you’d find a handcream, cleansing towelette, a hydrating mist, an eye serum, socks, a sleep mask, earplugs, tissues, a pen, and a toothbrush with toothpaste.
The temperature for the flight was fine, if not a little chilly, but the blankets provided more than enough warmth throughout the flight. The lavatories seemed to remain fairly clean throughout the flight, and had some amenities, including hand cream, hydrating mist, and a fabric refresher.
After about 45 minutes, we made our way to board our flight to Washington Dulles.
Dining & Beverages
Once in the sky, service started with a moist towel,

Followed by warm nuts and your choice of beverage. I was trying out two types of wine, reminisicing of the old Polaris wine flights.

Next, the meal tray was delivered. I opted for the steak entree, which was fine enough, but nothing spectacular. The salad was quite disappointing, but the mozzarella and pesto appetizer was fantastic. I also really dislike that United delivers everything on one tray; it takes away from the “premium” experience. If I want it delivered all at once, the “Express” dinner service exists for that.

Next up was the dessert trolley, which is a remanant from Continental Airlines’ famous ice cream sundaes. Included on the trolley were other desserts, coffee, tea, and cheese plates.

I opted for a full sampling, since I knew I wanted to review this flight.

The sundae was fantastic, and the cheeses were good. All in all, the meal service was adequate, but nothing spectacular.
Between services, the traditional snack station was set up in the back of the cabin.

Prior to arrival, we were served the final meal service. I chose the cheeseburger service, which was again, fine but not great. Those fries were no better than what you’d expect in a school cafeteria.

In-Flight Entertainment & Connectivity
United’s fleet are equipped with in-flight entertainment at each seat, with movies, TV shows, music, and other options to choose from. My personal favorite is the flight map, but to each their own.

United also has wifi equipped on this jet, which ranged from $11.99 for an hour to $16.99 for the whole flight.

Service & Crew
The crew in the Polaris business class cabin was, to put it mildly, unfriendly. Service was curt, without frills, and chilly, particularly from the purser. Another member of the cabin crew was warmer, but not by much. If you’re looking for a friendlier experience, I’d recommend looking elsewhere.
Final Verdict
From start to finish, the experience was mediocre at worst and avery pleasant and attentive. While the amenities are definitely a plus, and the seat itself is a treat, its the service and quality that dampens the Polaris experience. The flight attendants did not check in throughout the flight to ensure we were good on drinks and if we needed anything after the meal service, and the food was just ok at best.
Unfortunately, the quality of service you receive enhances or dampens the Polaris experience. I also consider the fact that you can get a better quality product on many other airlines flying across the Atlantic. All in all, it was great to fly business class instead of economy, but I would be hard pressed to say that the Polaris experience is worth spending your hard-earned money or miles for. I’d recommend looking at other airlines if possible.
