After my stay at the Element by Marriott Austin at The Domain, it was time to fly up to Washington, D.C. Thankfully, United has a direct flight between Austin and Washington Dulles airport, so I avoided making the short hop over to Houston Intercontinental.

Preflight Experience in Austin

Prior to my flight up to DC, I did manage to check out the United Club Austin, which is now closed for extensive renovations.

Today, I was flying in seat 21A, an Economy Plus exit row seat. United offers Collins Aerospace’s Pinnacle seat. Laid out in a 3-3 configuration, the economy seats offer 17 inches of width with a 34-inch pitch in Economy Plus and about a 3-inch recline.

The exit row clearly has a ton of legroom, with nearly 39 inches of pitch! For reference, I am 6’1″.

Once we were up in the air well on our way to Austin, the flight attendants came by with a drink and snack service.

Thanks to my Premier 1K status, I receive a complimentary Tapas snack box. This is in addition to the complimentary snack options, which included a savory pretzel mix and a stroopwafel.

In-Flight Entertainment & Connectivity

United has been retrofitting their older 737NG (immediate predecessor to the MAX) with the United NEXT initiative. For this updated interior, you’ll find 10-inch entertainment screens that will be synced, showing you your name and customizing the content for you.

This aircraft also has Wi-Fi onboard. On this occasion, it wasn’t the free Starlink service, so MileagePlus members could purchase at a discounted rate of $8.

Then again, who needs WiFi when you’ve got the best entertainment in the world at your disposal?

Lavatory

The United economy cabin restroom on their Boeing 737-900ER planes is even more cramped than I thought possible, with little space to move around. Great mood lighting though!

Final Verdict: United Boeing 737-900ER Economy Plus Review

The new elevated interiors from the United NEXT initiative are a huge upgrade and further help standardize the narrowbody fleet experience. Consistency is key, and if this is the experience we can expect from United in economy on (nearly) every flight, then that’s a really good sign of things to come. Other than that, the service was fine, the crew was very friendly, but it was the hard product that really shined.
