Following my Air Canada Express flight from Washington, DC to Montreal, I found myself with an extensive layover (over 9 hours) before my flight over to Mexico City. After getting some coffee and breakfast, then taking some time to take in breathtaking views at Mount Royal Park in Monteral, I made my way back to the airport to have some time to check out the Maple Leaf Lounge.

The Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Montreal (International) is an expansive lounge that offers guests plenty of space to relax. However, more needs to be done to keep the space clean.

Today, I accessed the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Montreal International thanks to my last-minute upgrade purchase to Business Class. However, if I hadn’t gotten the upgrade, I would’ve had access as a Star Alliance Gold thanks to my United MileagePlus Premier 1K status.

Atmosphere & Seating

When you enter the lounge, you’ll be admitted and asked to go upstairs to the seating area. The lounge had plenty of darker, warm tones that made it feel inviting and relaxing; however, the reality was very different.

This lounge was consistently packed from the minute I arrived. Although it is spacious, there wasn’t actually enough seating.

There were several different seating areas, with desk space to work, table spaces to eat, and lounge chairs to relax.

Additionally, the lounge had plenty of natural light coming in, and had great views of the tarmac.

I ended up finding another desk space toward the very back of the lounge, which was empty for a few minutes before another rush came in.

There’s also a roped-off section that I assume is used for top-tier Aeroplan elites and any other exclusive guests.

However, for the most exclusive guests (Celine Dion, if she flies commercial??), the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Montreal International has a Private Lounge that is completely secluded from the open area of the lounge.

Food & Beverage

The Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Montreal has a primary food area in the central area of the lounge. They’ve got several cold items.

This included a salad station.

An uninspiring cheese and fruit tray.

And for sweets they had cookies and choux available.

For their hot food selection, they had two soup options available, including an Italian wedding soup.

For what seemed to be more substantive, they had popcorn chicken and roasted peppers.

One of the lounge’s flagship attractions is this made-to-order pasta and panini station.

This live cooking station is impressive, and you can choose from different recipe options.

Ultimately, this wasn’t something worth going out of my way for. This pasta was greasy, unseasoned, and probably not worth the calories.

For beverages, there’s a dedicated drink station where you can grab some Coca-Cola products, coffee, and beers.

Additionally, there was a bar area where you could get liquor and wines.

Wi-Fi & Connectivity

Complimentary WiFi was available and worked well.

Cleanliness & Facilities

I’ve rarely had to flag the cleanliness of a lounge. However, the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Montreal was not in a state I felt comfortable with. There was an abundance of gnats and fruit flies roaming around. While it’s never great seeing one or two, I saw dozens. Additionally, there were just smells around certain areas of the lounge that were not conducive to a relaxing lounge environment. While most of the lounge was overall fine, having to even flag these is uncomfortable.

Amenities

The Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Montreal offers shower suites, which were a nice addition for passengers traveling abroad or connecting (such as myself).

To reserve, you go down to the front desk and get added to a check-in list or receive a key.

I ended up receiving shower 2. The receptionists give you a key and an occupied sign to place on the door.

The shower suite included a walk-in shower, towels, lotion, and soaps. There was also a toilet.

The walk-in shower was a little temperamental with the water temperature. But otherwise, a nice shower.

The toilet was just fine, it’s a serviceable toilet.

There was also a nice small coat rack, to hang items as you shower.

Final Thoughts & Verdict: Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Montreal Review

While this lounge looks great on the surface, it ultimately disappoints for several reasons. It is overcrowded, has inadequate seating, and is just plain dirty. Having that many gnats and fruit flies made me lose my appetite entirely. That being said:

• Is it worth arriving early to visit this lounge? No. The terminal has better food options, and sometimes the wait is so long there’s a line out the door. Odds are you might spend a good chunk of your connection waiting in line.
• What sets it apart? In a negative way, the poor upkeep. For a premier lounge in the Maple Leaf Lounge system, this should be better. Truly disappointing, and I believe your time is better spent elsewhere.
