Synonymous with the United Club are the words “carrot sticks” and “cheese cubes.”
Well United may be trying to kick that preset image about their lounges because my most recent trip to the United Club at LAX was anything but carrot sticks and cheese. Let’s dive in.
Upon entering the lounge you are asked for your form of access. Since I had just landed from a transcontinental flight in business class from Newark, I was granted lounge access. I’ll write a review on my most recent experience, but for now you can read about my Boston to San Francisco transcontinental experience here.
Upon entering, I settled into a table close to the food spread and helped myself to what ended up being my dinner for the night. The offerings at the lounge shocked me, as it was the most adequate spread I had seen in any United Club!
Moving past the typical salad offerings at the United Club, they had a hot food option besides soup: Korean BBQ style shredded beef with flour tortillas and fillers to make nice little tacos!

Of course, you had the customary soup and cookies on display as well, because would it really be a United Club if you didn’t have either of them?

After having my savory dinner, I left and made my way to the Renaissance Hotel LAX for my overnight stay. The next morning I came back to LAX to see what the lounge would have on hand for the morning crowd, and I wasn’t disappointed!
The lounge had a “Huevos Rancheros” station, where you could (to the best of your ability I suppose) make a plate focusing on huevos rancheros….obviously. I was surprised to find salsa on hand, but was disappointed that it lacked any semblance of heat/spice. Tabasco was unfortunately my fall-back š
In addition to the station, there were also pastries and other food items, including oatmeal and greek yogurt.
On the main counters with the food spread, you’ll find the coffee and Coca-Cola Co. dispensers, where you can get a variety of soft drinks. They also have a dedicated water station, where you can get flavor-infused water and your traditional morning juices.
The seating is expansive, with capacity for about 400 people, in addition to the outdoor terrace! I only snapped a few pics of the seating, there’s plenty more than what I’m showing.

The terrace is fairly simple, offering semi-plush seating. The views could be better, but I could also not have a view at all!
The lounge offers great views of the ramp, giving you some good angles. Unfortunately, I know nothing about good angles, as I’ve been told many times by the disappointed people whose picture I just took.
I finally concluded my stay at the United Club LAX, going to catch my First Class flight to Houston on the new B787-10 in the Polaris Cabin, which you can read about here!
Verdict
I have gone to several of the United Clubs within the US, and quite frankly none of them have compared to my experience at the United Club LAX. I had visited the United Club Newark the day before, and it was a subpar, crowded, and tired lounge. The food was the typical carrot sticks and cheese, with hummus and soup, and nothing else to stoke the imagination (review coming soon).
The fact that there was hot food that wasn’t soup that could (by a stretch) be considered at the least an hors d’oeuvre, and at most (in my case) a meal, was mind-blowing! At a United Club? In the United States? Couldn’t believe it.
You best believe I hope this becomes a norm at all United Clubs across the nation. Or at least at all hub clubs. This change still wouldn’t remedy the fact that you cannot access the Polaris Lounge while flying United Transcontinental Business Class in the same way you can access the Flagship Lounge when flying American Transcontinental Business, which is also mind-blowing, but not in a good way.
